NZ's South African Adventure

We finally did some serious climbing this morning. We had a laid back Friday evening with some wonderful roti from the Dehli Diner, rented the 2nd installment of Cheaper by the Dozen. This morning we made contact with Hannah from St. John's and picked her up at a Backpackers on Long St (where the action is) and made our way up to the starting point of the trail. It was a well travelled trail with many people already up the mountain. The kids loved seeing the goal in sight rather than hiking with no apparent destination. Harry was a super trooper (not the movie) and climbed almost all the way by himself. We saw lizards along the way which was exciting as well. The view from the top was fantastic. We were almost as high as the Table Mountain cableway, but not quite. We hope to climb that one as well at some point but without the chitlins. Once we reached the summit we admired the view and I noticed a man with a Canadian Maple Leaf on it, so I decided to say hello. It just so happens that this man works at the Simon Fraser University and Hannah is applying to study there in the fall. So they talked a little while. We also met people from Zimbabwe, France and Germany. It was actually tougher going down then going up, since Harrison was on my back for the big climbs. But we managed and also some paragliders take off from the side of the mountain. After we got down, we went to Zarina's takeways for some fresh Samoosas and Koeksisters. These were apparently the best in all Cape Town due to their freshness. And the promised goodness did not disappoint. Each samoosa cost 2 Rand so we bought twenty to share (about $7.00). Rey I ate a bunch just for you.

Tomorrow we've been invited for a potluck after church. Katy will be reading scripture as well it is youth Sunday.

I'm trying to upload more pictures, but the connection is poor, keep checking.

Human Rights Day

We recently found out that today was a holiday…what a nice surprise. That meant the kids stayed home from school, mom and dad tried unsuccessfully to sleep in and we took in some free concerts in the Company Gardens downtown. We took train today as parking we thought might be rough, plus the train is only about $4.00. We found our way downtown easily enough and walked to the gardens. We saw some traditional African music, someone singing pop songs in Afrikaans, a boy band and some rappers, all within the space of an hour. Some of the music was good, some was not so good. The gardens' are on the same "yard" as the parliament buildings, the president's residence and the Holocaust museum as well as a fancy old church, libraries, etc. After this it was near lunch and we were somoosa hungry. We walked down the Loop St and made our way to the waterfront for some fried goodness and iced tea. What a treat. We watched the seals, people, etc and ate a nice lunch.

We spent the past weekend at a church camp south of Cape Town. It's a rustic camp, the only luxury being a heated pool. Otherwise there aren't many activities like horses or ropes, etc. However we had a few sessions on Saturday and some planning sessions on Sunday. There was lots of singing and presbytering. The food was ok, however the best part was meeting and getting to know many new people which we only had met at church and said a quick "hi" to in the past. The kids enjoyed getting to know some friends, Henry went to a surfing practice with the 8 and under SA champion. He thought that was pretty cool.

Today we moved. Up to the 5th floor. It has a fabulous view over the entire Cape Flats area and a little less noise from the street. We will have a new phone number as a result, which I don't know yet. As well our mailing address will change to A504 instead of A104.
