Worcester
Pronounced Verster, Worcester is about an hour’s drive away along the N1 highway through the mountains (literally through there a five km long tunnel). We dropped the kids off at school and took off for Carla’s meeting at 9:30. We were a little late, but were still done by 11:30. The town itself is in the heart of wine country in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. We were told that these mountains will get snow at some point in the winter. WOOHOO! Harry and I had some time to kill so we went downtown to check out the pulse of the city. It was definitely less crowded and noisy. We pitted at McD’s for an ice cream, apple pie and coffee. We then proceeded to take a few pictures of the city center park with a church in the background, and some sort of ruins which we didn’t get the background of. We then headed back to the hospice where Carla and Kate (research assistant) were finishing up. I took a few pictures of the grounds and the building, but when I started taking pictures out front of the hospital, the guard came up and told me that cameras were not allowed. I insisted that the doctor inside the hospice said as long as I don’t take shots of the patients, that I was OK. He still told me to stop and I turned off the Canon. The hospice itself was around the side of the hospital seemingly a third rate building or afterthought. It was small, with a courtyard in the middle and seemed very third world. The people were very friendly though and Carla and Kate had successful interviews.
On the way back to town we saw a big baboon entering the free way, we hoped it would watch for traffic. We then picked up Henry and a half watermelon (ten kilos) for $4.20. Sweeter then Giesbrecht’s for sure. The forecast here calls for gale force winds and rain…also lower temps down to under 20C. We’ve not seen real rain here yet, so hopefully it cools things off and cleans things up. If it’s rainy on the weekend, our hope is to visit the Aquarium near the waterfront. It is supposed to be world class.
Update – Friday
It is raining today, the kids had their slickers on to walk to school. Harry had the plastic cover on the chariot and dad had on his wonderful MEC Gortex jacket and Salomon Gortex shoes on. We all were dry when we arrived at our destinations. I can’t believe these shoes, I highly recommend them…Darryl get them before they run out.
We have a new visitor in our flat daily and his name is Kunai (spelling is probably way off - rhymes with Dubai). He is 7 but has some difficulty with English so he is still in Grade R which is before one. He talks about cricket all the time and is staying with his aunt here. Kunai is one of those guys who doesn’t need an invitation, he just comes in and makes himself at home (all the time).
Happy birthday to Rick Mueller this week and my mom (belated) on the 3rd.
